Infertility in women and men is a common problem. Peoples perception of “making babies” is that of simplicity but that isn’t always the case. The overall percentage chance of getting pregnant first time with unprotected sex is only 18%.

If partners have tried for a child regulary and failed the stress levels rise which of course becomes massively upsetting and causes more problems. In turn the frustration leads to the questions of infertility in women and men putting pressure on any relationship.. The strain at that point can be unbearable.

Stress and nutrition are major factors when diagnosing infertility and also instances of irregular or painful periods. But all of this can be remedied.

It has been proved that natural and Chinese medicines can help solve the issues of infertility in women and it is becoming a common choice for a lot of couples. If followed the practice allows both men and women to deal with issues of infertility with some non-invasive methods that really deal with the improvement of energy flow, hormones, and elemental imbalances throughout the body.

Eric Renaud has been practicing acupuncture in the Pine Hills neighborhood for about 10 years now, providing help to those seeking pain relief.

Renaud, 44, has been a licensed New York state acupuncturist since 2000. His office is at 485 Western Ave. inside the Acupuncture Balancing building, previously called Albany Classical Acupuncture. Nearby landmarks include the Mobil station and Citizen’s Bank.

His search for office space to practice acupuncture brought him to the Pine Hills. He chose this neighborhood for his practice because it is convenient for people who seek his help to get here. His clients can walk or take a bus; or, they can drive and use the parking lot behind the building.

Acupuncture is an alternative medicine that can be used to treat various conditions including stress, anxiety, depression, migraines, the common cold, asthma, and many others. This is done by the insertion and guidance of sterile needles in specific points of the human body. Renaud also uses a technique called “cupping” which could provide effective relief for muscle pain, spasms, and more.

When teenager Andrew Pearce was first diagnosed with the immune system disorder Guillaim-Barre syndrome, he could barely walk. His muscles were weak and he was in deep, aching pain. At one point, he could not move anything in his body from his shoulders down. He went through a long series of therapies, including acupuncture, to help restore his muscle function. Acupuncture aided with his recovery by helping to stimulate the nerves and loosen the muscles in his knees.

Over the past several decades, people like Andrew have turned more and more to complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs) such as acupuncture. Acupuncture is a popular way of managing symptoms. Physicians are recognizing the value of acupuncture as a helpful and valid treatment option.

In 2000, Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital established an acupuncture clinic in conjunction with the Michener Institute. Headed by Dr. Adam Chen, a licensed acupuncturist with over 30 years of clinical experience, Mount Sinai offers acupuncture to a wide variety of patients who live withchronic pain . About 10% of his patients are children. Working at Mount Sinai provides acupuncture practitioners and students with “a new perspective on the application of acupuncture and the role it can play when combined with modern medicine in a clinical setting,” says Dr. Chen.
What is acupuncture?

Mounting evidence suggests that acupuncture is an effective treatment for retinitis pigmentosa (RP), a degenerative eye disorder that may to lead to blindness. A recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Acupuncture and Moxibustion concludes that acupuncture treatment protects the optic nerve from damage caused by intraocular pressure by alleviating stresses on retinal and optic nerve axonal ultrastructures.1 The Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine published that the use of Chinese medicine improved retinal cone activity for patients with retinitis pigmentosa, even in cases of advanced retinal degeneration. Using electroretinograms for the investigation, the study also concludes that, “TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) treatment could also enhance the bioactivity of (the) nerve network and therefore have a definite significance in retarding the progression of disease and keeping the central vision.”2 In another study, injections of She Xiang into acupuncture points UB18 and UB23 helped patients with retinitis pigmentosa. The study concludes that injection of She Xiang into Ganshu (UB18) and Shenshu (UB23) “can improve effectively the function and metabolism of optic cells, promote blood circulation of the retina, enhance the visual acuity, and protect the central vision for the patient of retinitis pigmentosa.”3 Yet another study of retinitis pigmentosa patients receiving acupuncture (ranging from ages 7 – 75 years) showed significant improvement and a halting of deterioration of the visual field.4

For more than 5,000 years, acupuncture has been used in Chinese culture to cure people of all types of chronic ailments.

Since 2006, Dr. Ruth Roberts veterinary clinic on James Island has been using the same ancient technique on man’s best friend.

Dr. Roberts says, “In most cases we are able to restore mobility and diminish pain to the point that the animal has an excellent quality of life.”

Dr. Roberts uses the same type of needles used for acupuncture on people and places them in different pressure points or meridians on the animal. She says the hope with the procedure is to use the needles to stimulate the flow of blood and chi or energy to bring the body back to normal order and functioning.

“In some cases it can be stunning. We can see some dogs that have to be carried in here and can walk out with some assistance that’s what we love to see,” Dr. Roberts says.

Coors Field has made plenty of pitchers want to stick a fork in their eye. But needles in their body?

After a forgettable finish last season, Rockies right-hander Jason Hammel turned to acupuncture and herbs. He did so at his wife’s suggestion, openly searching for a way to combat a dead arm and lacking energy that he traced to cholesterol medication.

“The medication worked, but one of the side effects was body soreness. Bottom line is that I didn’t pitch well. No excuses. But I wanted to get off the medication,” said Hammel, who went 10-9 with a 4.81 ERA last season. “My wife suggested that I try acupuncture and I was like, ‘Come on.’ But I was astonished.”

The morning after his first session in Providence, R.I., Hammel couldn’t believe how good he felt. Not only were his muscles relaxed, his energy level was redlining.

“Usually at 8 in the morning, I am dragging. It was amazing,” Hammel said.

"The study shows that both acupuncture and exercise reduce high levels of testosterone and lead to more regular menstruation," says docent associate professor Elisabet Stener-Victorin, who is responsible for the study. "Of the two treatments, the acupuncture proved more effective."

Acupuncture and physical exercise improve hormone levels and menstrual bleeding pattern in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), reveals research from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

PCOS is a common disorder that affects up to 10% of all women of child-bearing age. Women with PCOS frequently have irregular ovulation and menstruation, with many small immature egg follicles in the ovaries. This causes the ovaries to produce more testosterone which, in turn, leads to troublesome hair growth and acne. Obesity, insulin resistance and cardiovascular disease are also widespread among these patients.

In the current study, published in the American Journal of Physiology-Endocrinology and Metabolism, a group of women with PCOS were given acupuncture where the needles were stimulated both manually and with a weak electric current at a DELETE”VERY” low frequency that was, to some extent, similar to muscular work. A second group was instructed to exercise at least three times a week, while a third group acted as controls. All were given information on the importance of regular exercise and a healthy diet.

“The study shows that both acupuncture and exercise reduce high levels of testosterone and lead to more regular menstruation,” says docent associate professor Elisabet Stener-Victorin, who is responsible for the study. “Of the two treatments, the acupuncture proved more effective.”

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is medical beliefs and practices often used widely across eastern Asia, but introduced to western medical practices as an alternative look to treat physical conditions. Many doctors across the United States are beginning to take a closer look at this, which includes herbal medicine, acupuncture, dietary therapy and massage.

At a recent Live Well Lecture Series held at Complementary Medicine in Freeport, Doctors Glenn and Julie Smith talked about how they blend eastern and western medicine into their medical practice.

“Chinese medicine is a very hard thing for Westerners to understand,” Glenn said. “This is a practice that is more than 5,000 years old – based on the vital energy in the body.”
Glenn said the Chinese were meticulous record keepers that began with the cause and effect in the body. It is not magic or mystical, but rather a physiological response to the body. It is all about balance – the yin and the yang.

A few years ago, 83-year-old Janet Davis was enjoying her plane, and her retirement. But a second mastectomy grounded her last April.

A few years ago, 83-year-old Janet Davis was enjoying her plane, and her retirement. But a second mastectomy grounded her last April. And now the cancer has spread to her bones. So Dr. Jongbae Park stepped in to help. His solution: acupuncture. Janet would rather have needles than pain killers. “It reduces the pain. It’s just not there anymore,” she said. “As treatment effect of acupuncture becomes noticeable, patients start to reduce their narcotics or pain killers,” said Dr. Park. The proof? Studies show acupuncture alone cut post-chemotherapy fatigue by 31 percent. It also cut hot flashes by 50 percent, and slashed overall cancer pain by 36 percent.

Charleston chiropractor Paul Casingal added acupuncture to his medical toolbox because he believed it could help the terrible migraine headaches his 14-year-old daughter suffered. Indeed, the very first treatment in which Casingal gently inserted a half-dozen needles in his daughter's head - needles she didn't even feel - resulted in her pain decreasing by half in about 30 minutes. Subsequent treatments have actually eliminated her headaches. She hasn't suffered a migraine in a year. "That's when I had my 'aha' moment," Casingal said. His chiropractic work had been helping patients with chronic pain, back and neck problems. By adding acupuncture, Casingal believed he could do more. "Everything I did before then helped them, but not as fast as acupuncture," Casingal said. "Doing both together has been incredible in terms of helping my patients."
